… crb & qts

The following information is a breakdown on Enhanced Criminal Record Bureau Disclosures (CRB’s) and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), including what they are, why you need them and how to obtain them.

We strive always to provide the most up-to-date information and flexible solutions for you.

If after reading through though, you still have more questions, please just give us a shout.

Guidance on CRB’s
What is a CRB?

An Enhanced CRB is a check against a persons criminal history background in the UK

Who needs a CRB?

All people working with children in the UK that have unsupervised access, are required to have a CRB

When do I need one?

A CRB is required at the commencement of, and/or the change of, any employment. However, if you are registered with more than one agency it is possible to use the same CRB check as long as the agency that holds the original check is happy to confirm their countersignatory status and any disclosable outcomes

What is the process?

If you have a current CRB check through another agency, sign a “consent for release of information on previous Disclosure” form.

If we cannot obtain confirmation of a previous CRB check, or if you do not have a current CRB check, then you will need to apply for a new Enhanced CRB check, which we can organise for you.

How long does the application process take?

The disclosure process can take up to 6 weeks

Can I work in the meantime?

Teachers are able to work without a CRB clearance provided an application is in process and:

  • 1.  A List 99 clearance is completed
  • 2.  References/Referees have been checked satisfactorily
  • 3.  A police check from the persons country of origin is provided
  • 4.  The Head Teacher of the school concerned is informed that your application is in process and that all other vetting has been completed
How much does a CRB cost?

The CRB charges £36 per application

Depending on whether you would like a portable or non-portable CRB check, either a further £9 or £14 costs are incurred through the use of a third party, Disclosures.co.uk or…

The total cost to Vibe of obtaining a CRB check is therefore either £45 or £50. We pass this cost onto you, but do not charge for a CRB check until you have worked for us, and then recoup the cost in your first weeks pay.

Guidance on QTS
How QTS applies to Overseas Trained Teachers (OTT’s)

OTT’s are eligible to work as unqualified teachers for a maximum of four years without the need to gain QTS. The four year exemption period begins on the first day that a teacher takes up their post in a state school and expires four calendar years later.

From 1 September 2008 OTT’s who have not obtained QTS within 4 years will not be allowed to continue teaching beyond four years even if they are undertaking employment-based training leading to QTS. (The consultation had proposed to introduce this change from 1 September 2007 but it has been deferred until 1 September 2008.)

The overseas trained teacher programme (OTTP)

This offers OTT’s the opportunity to gain QTS while working as a teacher. Once in a teaching position in a school, the trainee follows an individual training and assessment programme leading to QTS.

OTT’s who were trained in the European Economic Areas or Switzerland may be eligible for QTS under mutual recognition arrangements and should first contact the General Teaching Council for England (GTC).

Key features of the overseas trained teacher programme

  • • Trainees must have a teaching qualification equivalent to a UK bachelor’s degree and hold GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent) in mathematics and English. For primary teaching, candidates also need GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent) in science
  • • Trainees must be employed as a teacher in a school
  • • If training is needed, the maximum training programme is one year
Applying for OTTP places

For more information on this programme, contact the OTT advice line on 0845 6000 991 or e-mail ott@tdainfo.co.uk

QTS Assessment Only Route

There are special arrangements that give OTT’s the option of gaining QTS without further training. In order to qualify for this route, you will need to have a minimum of 12 months experience teaching in the UK and present a portfolio that demonstrates through lesson plans, lesson observations and reflections, that you have repeatedly met the Standards.

For more information, contact the University of Gloucestershire on 01242714852 or qtsassessmentonly@glos.ac.uk
