Fillies, frocks and raceday frivolities: My Royal Ascot experience

It was a perfect day for a punt and pink champagne at Royal Ascot last Thursday, as we donned our finest and joined Contiki for Ladies’ Day.

Not to be outdone by the florals, fluorescents and feathers, Hig even ironed his silk tie for the event!

Our day began with a champagne breakfast at the Contiki Basement, before we hopped on a coach, and in true Contiki style, were taken on a tour through the city of London to the fields of Ascot.

When the sun is shining in London, spirits are lifted high, and this was more than true for Thursday’s crowd. Racegoers laid out their charming picnic spreads both inside and outside the racecourse, popping champagne bottles and toasting to the sunshine. We enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch in the Contiki tent, and then headed into the Silver Ring to watch all the action of the Queen’s royal procession (wait, no, the races).

If you head to Royal Ascot and are lucky enough to be standing in the sun for the day, don’t underestimate the strength of the English UV rays. Otherwise, you may find yourself in a spontaneous moment of intimacy with a ‘sensible-looking’ stranger as they apply some SPF50 to your sensitive skin. (Actually, this could be a #protip for some…)

Whether you’re a seasoned punter or an Ascot newbie, a day at this historic event is one to remember. The fashion is as extravagant as the celebration of a winning bet, and there’s nothing quite like the tradition and atmosphere of this major fixture of the British social calendar.
